China closes down 823 polluting businesses, says government

BEIJING -- The government has shut down 823 businesses accused of polluting China as part of a nationwide environmental campaign, the official Xinhua News Agency said Thursday.

At the same time, 283 people suspected of illegally discharging pollutants have been investigated, the State Environmental Protection Administration reported.

Investigators from municipal environmental protection agencies have inspected more than 83,000 businesses across China since the administration launched the campaign in late May, Xinhua said. Pollution problems were found at chemical plants, foundries, paper mills, and pharmaceutical companies, among other places.

China has promised in recent years to fight pollution and has launched several high-profile campaigns aimed at cleaning up its environment.
