France received 75.5 million tourists in the year
2000...almost 25 million more than the United States.
No Frenchman, of course, would be surprised to hear that
his country is the most visited in the world. France is
followed in this designation by the States, which is
followed by Spain, Italy, China, the UK, Russia, Mexico,
Canada, and Germany.
More tourist dollars are spent in the U.S. than anyplace
else on Earth ($85.2 million in 2000). Americans also spend
more than anyone else when they travel. American tourists
spent $65 million outside their own country last year.
Why this interest in such things trivial?
We're waist deep in world facts and figures, researching
our 2002 Quality of Life Index. I'll share more trivial
findings over the coming few weeks. Then look for the full
report and survey in the January 2002 print edition of
International Living.
P.S. Belarus is the last dictatorship in Europe.
